Rebecca Front stars in a BBC Radio 4 drama, A Little Princess. It is in two parts and will be shown on Saturday 11th February and Sunday 12th February at 9pm. It is a radical dramatisation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s influential 1905 novel about a boarding school pupil who suffers a reversal of fortunes when her father’s fortune is lost.

The following is from the blog ‘afternoon tea’ by Heather.

Inspector Lewis’ Clare Holman

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of August 1, 2016

One of the things I’ve been enjoying about watching Inspector Lewis on Sunday nights is the romance between Robbie and medical examiner Dr. Laura Hobson. They make a great couple. The two actors are also good friends in real-life. That’s not really surprising since they’ve been working together since 1995 when actress Clare Holman, who plays the forensic pathologist, first appeared in Inspector Morse.

After Morse ended in 2000, Holman “left” Oxford for six years, before returning to assist Kevin Whately’s DS Lewis, and she’s appeared in every episode since. In the time between Morse and Lewis, Holman worked in a couple of episodes of another popular British mystery series which also happens to be filmed not too far from Oxford; Midsomer Murders. The episodes were “Country Matters” and “Ring Out Your Dead.” Maybe you’ve seen them?

According to Holman, Whately is not only “a lovely man”, but also “a great company member, very loyal to the crew” and she likens the Lewis cast to being “a bit like a family.” Like Whately, Holman’s real-life husband also hails from “up north.” Director Howard Davies, who was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2011, is from a coal-mining family in Durham. He and Holman were together 10 years before finally tying the knot in 2005.

As well as performing, Holman also teaches at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also in the town of Rye in Sussex, near the large 19th century home where she lives. Holman and her husband previously had a “tiny cottage,” but brought their current home to accommodate guests which frequently include Holman’s stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.

When she moved to the idyllic English countryside, Holman took up the ukulele. She would sometimes pop into a local Rye pub on a Tuesday evening to play with a group of local amateur musicians who got together and played at her 50th birthday party a couple of years ago. According to an interview Holman gave “it was absolutely lovely and lasted the whole weekend. We had about 28 friends to stay. Some were in camper-vans, some in tents, the rest were in the house.”

Holman also enjoys writing, painting and gardening.

For those who didn’t see my post on Facebook, below is a photo of the bust used in the Endeavour episode, ‘Harvest‘. It was created by Ruth Bader Gilbert

On the subject of the ‘Harvest’ episode, I also found out that the location used as a stand in for the nuclear power station was Fawley Power Station.

  1. Hi Chris. Thanks as always for the recap.

Fyi, in case you weren’t aware, your Clare Holman showreel isn’t playing on youtube (at least in the US). There’s a message posted that says BBC Worldwide has blocked the video on copyright grounds.
